Quick Start requirements
- The old iPhone should run a current enough iOS version for Quick Start; Apple’s support page currently lists iOS 11 or later for the iPhone flow.
- Wi-Fi and Bluetooth must be on for the old device.
- Keep the devices near each other and connected to power if the move may be long.
- Have the old device passcode and Apple Account credentials ready when prompted.
Transfer steps
- Power both phones
Start with the old iPhone unlocked and the iPhone Duo at the setup screen.
- Bring them together
Wait for the Quick Start animation or setup prompt on the old device, then authenticate as Apple requests.
- Pick a route
Choose direct device-to-device transfer or download from iCloud according to the option Apple presents and the time you have.
- Leave them alone
Keep both devices near each other and plugged in. Transfer duration varies with the amount of data and conditions.
- Verify before erasing
Check photos, messages, important apps, calls, and the cellular line before you reset the old phone.
If the prompt disappears
Apple’s first suggestion is to restart both devices and try again. Then check that Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are enabled, the phones are close, and the old device is not already in another setup flow.
If the old phone cannot complete the transfer, do not improvise by deleting data. Use an available backup or Apple Support’s current recovery options. For Android, use Move to iOS instead of trying to force a Quick Start transfer.
Confirmed
- Apple documents Quick Start, direct transfer, and an iCloud route.
- Apple says transfer time varies and recommends keeping the devices near each other and connected to power.
Provisional
- A carrier eSIM may follow a separate workflow; a completed data transfer does not prove that cellular activation also succeeded.
FAQ
Why is Quick Start not appearing?
Check Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, bring the phones together, and restart both devices. Apple specifically recommends restarting both when the prompt disappears.
Does Quick Start move every app login?
Not necessarily. Some apps and services require their own sign-in, security check, or recovery process after transfer.
